WATERING NEW LAWNS
It is crucial to water your turf immediately after installing. During hot weather or when installing larger quantities, begin watering once you have laid half or a small section. Turf slabs must be kept damp until the roots have established. Water 2-4 times per day for 5-10 minutes to keep them moist until established. If you have sub surface irrigation, you must water from above until the roots have established. You will know when the lawn has established by gently pulling back the corner of one slab, when you can no longer lift the slabs off the soil the lawn has set root and established.
WATERING ESTABLISHED LAWNS
Less frequent, longer duration watering is recommended for fully established lawns. This encourages a deeper, stronger root system which is better equipped to handle the hot dry months. The best time to water is either early morning or evening to avoid evaporation. As a general guide, warm season grasses such as Sir Walter DNA Certified, Nullarbor Couch and Eureka Kikuyu will need 1-2 deep waters per week. TifTuf is also a warm season grass, however it’s an extremely drought tolerant lawn. TifTuf only requires watering when it shows signs of drying. Over watering TifTuf can hinder the grass rather than help. Watering routines may need to be adjusted during extreme weather conditions.
WATERING TIPS:
- Water early morning, or evening for longer periods of time to avoid evaporation.
- Encourage a deep root structure by watering deeply, less frequently.
- Monitor weather conditions when setting your watering schedule.
- Water with an irrigation system or rose sprinkler
- Consider a wetting agent to increase water penetration in hydrophobic soil
