Site Preparation

Thinking of installing turf at your home? DIY installation is easier than you may think!

The key to an amazing lawn is the site preparation. The amount of preparation required will vary from site to site, however the more time and effort that is put into preparing your turf area, the better your end result will be.

When choosing a lawn, it is important to think about how you want to use your space, this will help you decide which lawn is best for you. A simple sketch or a landscape plan is a good idea to get those ideas flowing! Contact our friendly team to talk through your turf options.

Remove all existing lawn

Spray out existing lawn and weeds with a non-selective herbicide, such as Roundup no less than 14 days before laying your new lawn. Some stubborn weeds or grasses may require more than 1 application.

Remove any rocks, debris or remaining vegetation by hand.

Prepare the soil

If your area has healthy soil, it may be as simple as rotary hoeing to a depth of 100mm, levelling and laying turf. For areas with minimal or poor soil, we recommend introducing a quality turf mix or underlay. For clay soils, applications of gypsum may need to be incorporated to improve soil quality. If you require soil, we suggest contacting EG Hollard & Son or Newtons Building & Landscape Supplies.

When preparing your area, we recommend levelling 30mm below paths, driveways or borders. This will ensure the turf sits flush against any edging or paving once installed.

Level your soil

Use a rake or a straight piece of timber to level the soil in your area. Spend some extra time to ensure you have a smooth, even surface. A level lawn will give you a better finish and a more even mowing surface.
